The Power of Intentional Listening in Podcasting

Updated: Sep 5

Many times, we invite guests onto our shows with the intention of having meaningful conversations. We plan, we research, and we often come in with genuine excitement. But somewhere along the way, we can lose sight of why we brought them on in the first place.

It’s easy to get caught up in the motions—pressing “record,” asking the questions, reacting, smiling for the camera—but are we truly listening? Are we staying connected to the guest in front of us, or are we just filling airtime to meet a schedule?

As podcasters, it's our responsibility to make sure that the people we feature feel seen, heard, and valued—not just used for content. This requires presence. This requires intention.

Sometimes, as friendships form with repeat guests or familiar faces, we let our guard down in the wrong way. We forget the why behind the conversation. We begin performing instead of connecting. But your audience can sense the difference. Viewers and listeners pick up on your energy, your eye contact, your expressions—and whether you're truly engaged or just waiting to speak again.

So here's a gentle reminder:

When you sit down with a guest, remove the distractions. Quiet the internal chatter. Don’t just aim to vet their story—seek to cultivate a relationship. Be fully present. Not only will your interviews become more authentic and powerful, but your audience will begin to trust you more deeply as well.

Podcasting isn’t just about information. It’s about connection. And connection is what moves people.

Every person you bring on your platform is a chance to showcase humanity, to deepen your message, and to build something meaningful—on and off the mic.

So today, let’s commit to being more intentional with our conversations. Let’s be known not just for the questions we ask, but for the way we listen.

Have a great day, my friend.—Shana Lorraine
